Goteborg, Sweden Trip: Part I - Intro

The City of Goteborg
Göteborg is situated at the heart of Scandinavia, centrally located between the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian capitals. This strategic location makes Göteborg a true gateway to Europe.
Brief History
Trade, shipping and international contacts have characterised Göteborg since its foundation in 1621. In 1731, the Swedish East India Company began trading with the Far-East. In the 19th century, Göteborg became industrialised, largely due to the arrival of Scottish and English businessmen. Many of them became rich and donated fortunes that were used to found a hospital, library and university. Modern day Göteborg, with its wide boulevards, parks and stone houses was built at the turn of the 19th century. The shipyards grew large in the 20th century but declined in the end of the 1970’s and have now been transformed into residential areas, workplaces and boulevards for people to enjoy the harbour atmosphere. The beautification of the city and the harbourside are ongoing projects today.
The region in and around Göteborg is Scandinavia's most important area for trade and industry.
Göteborg is the home town of world famous companies such as Astra-Zeneca, Volvo, Hasselblad Cameras, SKF Ball Bearings, Ericsson Microwave Systems and Noble Biocare. The telecommunications network in the Göteborg region is one of the most sophisticated in the world. Many foreign companies base their Nordic operations in Göteborg. Some 500 companies operating on the international market are represented here. Göteborg is also the home of Göteborg University, Chalmers University of Technology and the IT University of Göteborg. This makes it Sweden's second largest university city with a total of 61,000 students, most of whom will contribute to the future success and growth of the region.
Price levels in Göteborg
In 2004, the Swedish Tourist Authority commissioned a comparison study of the price level for convention visitors in 14 European cities.
The results of the study show that the costs of holding an event in Göteborg are 14% below the average index level and a mere 9% above the cheapest city.
Price levels in Göteborg compared to other European cities:
The study is based on the collection of prices for a number of goods and services typical of a convention visitor’s consumption, such as hotel, restaurant, transport, shopping and city sightseeing.
